Romance Of The Cup Dead? No Chance, Queen's Park 2 - 0 Raith Rovers

Last updated : 11 December 2005 By Andyboy
Queen's Park pulled off the shock of the round with a fine 2-0 victory over Raith Rovers at Hampden Park.

Second division Rovers were widely fancied to advance to the Third Round after the Queen's crashed to a 3-0 pummelling at home to Montrose last week but a simply brilliant Spiders display halted Rovers run.

Queen's injury problems had failed to clear up so it was the same team who lined up for the third week in a row, but, Tony Quinn & Bryan Felvus returned from injury and to the bench.

Cup matches usually throw up some thrillers, last year Queen's dominated Stranraer for ninety minutes in a fantastic display at Stair Park but still went out 1-0 due to Stephen Swift's last minute header, Queen's were due a turn in the Scottish Cup.

And, after only 47 seconds Queen's raced into a lead. Young David Weatherston overcame a 10 yard gap between him & Jed Stirling to outpace the former Albion Rovers Star and come away with the ball. He ran for another twenty yards before cooly slotting past Ally Brown from a near impossible angle. Bedlam on the terraces ensued the Spiders support couldn't believe it and already Rovers manager Gordon Dalziel was being asked to "Get It Sorted" by some sections of their support. Weatherston's first Hampden goal and what a good one it was.

The rest of the half was played at a decent pace with and Rovers creating chances but when the high balls rained on DC's goal the young keeper was ready to deal with it along with some solid defending by Mick Dunlop & Damiano Agostini.

Queen's did create another chance before the half time break though. Alan Trouten's free kick was knocked on by Mark Ferry but Murray toed it past from four yards.

At the beginning of the Second Half you could tell Rovers were ready for business. They were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box and dead ball specialist Jed Stirling stepped up. He curled it towards the top corner and DC brilliantly tipped the ball on to the post. Raith kept going and won four corners succesively but the Dunlop & Agostini were solid in the air and won everything until McManus headed miles over.

Queen's then replaced the injured Tommy Murray with young Bryan Felvus and moments after that Queen's created their first chance of the half. A sweeping passing move ended up with Kettlewell shooting straight at Brown from three yards.

Queen's survived a minor scare just afterwards when Fairbairn broke in from the right but Mick Dunlop swung in a fantastic tackle to disposses the former East Fife Winger.

But, Queen's rounded the game up on 76 minutes. Paton unleashed Felvus against Stirling and he ran to the edge of the box before stunningly lifting the ball over Brown and into the net. As some Rovers fans clapped and others threw their scarves to the ground the Spiders support went mental! More bedlam on the terraces as more & more Rovers scarves ended up on the track beside the pitch.

But, Queen's still had to be alert and Fairbairn came close with a 40 yard thunderbolt but it Queen's who looked more likely to score a third. Felvus & Weatherston were both denied well by Brown.

After three minutes of stoppage time had elapsed Martin Sproule blew his whistle and Hampden truly did roar. The Spiders support applauded the first Hampden Scottish Cup win over a league side since 1986 and I for one won't forget the merry jig of Dunlop, Clark & Crawford as they ventured towards the tunnel.

A fantastic performance by Billy Stark's troops, bring on the Spartans!!!!!!!
