Stark Salutes Spiders Heroes

Queen's Park boss Billy Stark, saluted his Spiders stars after they put on a heroic performance to dump SPL side Aberdeen out of the CIS Cup on penalties by 5-3.

Proud boss Stark said "They were absolutely dead on their feet in extra time, that was our sixth game in three weeks.

"In football terms, it was an heroic performance - there is no doubt about that. The players showed their mettle and real nerve, although I didn't think we could go that long without conceding a goal. It's a fantastic result for the club.

"I don't know what to say about my players, they have been absolutely phenomenal since the start of the season. There was a lot of pressure on Aberdeen, and I have been there before. It was a difficult night for them.

"We were organised and got a lot of the little breaks. There were not too many clear-cut chances."

23 year old left back Mick Dunlop, who was sporting a fetching bandage throughout the match after an ariel clash with Dons Richard Foster, said of the thrilling Firhill encounter.

"The boys dug in really well and showed total composure with the penalties. Not surprisingly Aberdeen had more of the ball than us, but nobody can question the way we went about our business.

"We worked hard, shut them down and defended really well. We showed a bit of quality going forward too. It is a fantastic result for the club and the fans"

Veteran goalkeeper Mark Cairns, 37, not only kept a clean sheet but also scored one of Spiders penalty kicks, he said.

"We defended well and they couldn't get through us. We were camped in our box at times but most of their shots were from long range."

Midfielder Jonny Whelan was introduced as a sub at the beginning of extra time and the "gnarled veteran" was just relieved to be a part of it all, he said.

"The gaffer had already made a couple of substitutions in normal time, and was about to bring on Tony Quinn, which would have been our third and final sub of the game.

"But a couple of minutes before the end of normal time they noticed Richard Sinclair, was struggling with an injury and decided to hold off and put me on for him as went into extra-time.

"So in that respect, I was quite lucky to get on. I was just focusing on trying to keep the back door bolted shut and fortunately managed to do that and take the game to penalties.

"I've been a Queen's Park player for seven years and we've played against some SPL opposition in that time. However we've never played against Rangers or Celtic. It would be great to play at Parkhead or Ibrox, though we'd likely be up against it.

"I just feel we performed really well on the night and kept our cool when it mattered in the penalty shoot-out. I voluenteered to take one of the penalties, but I was told my services were not required.

"But, to be fair to the lads, who stepped up, they put them away well and it was a great feeling to see Alan Trouten's winning penalty hit the back of the net."
