Queen's Park 1 - 3 Motherwell

Spiders' pre season began in earnest as a strong Queen's Park team was beaten by a mix of Motherwell's reserve side and first team.

Queen's Park only had one "new" face on the pitch at the beginning, Frankie Carroll making his comeback after his year at Stenhousemuir. Otherwise it was as expected, with former 'Well target David Crawford in goals with Paul Paton, Mick Dunlop, Richard Sinclair and Damiano Agostini in front of him. The midfield was Kettlewell, Quinn, Trouten and Ferry, with Steven Canning playing just behind lone striker Carroll.

It was an early error by usually reliable keeper DC which led to the early opener. A tame header from Dossers forward Richard Foran was fumbled back to the Irishman's feet, the former Carlisle United man made no mistake in sticking away the rebound from 3 yards.

Queen's began to probe after that and Frankie Carroll looked lively hassling a youthful looking Motherwell back line, the final ball lacked and Tony Quinn created Queen's two best chances of the half within five minutes of the other. Twice he made driving runs to the edge of the box where he drove powerful shots wide failing to trouble Scotland's third choice keeper Graeme Smith.

Motherwell soon made it two after a ball over the top caused confusion between Agostini, Sinclair and the onrushing DC, none of the three went for the ball and Australian international Scott McDonald lifted the ball into an empty net.

Queen's Park rallied though and scored a goal just before half time, a good passing move involving Ferry, Trouten and Quinn saw Frankie Carroll deliver a low cross into the box which was fired home by Steven Canning from six yards.

Early in the second half, David McCallum (taking over from the holidaying Billy Stark) made four quickfire changes. Frankie Carroll, Steven Canning, Damiano Agostini and Mark Ferry made way for A Trialist, David Weatherston, Andy McGinty and Jonny Whelan.

The second half saw Well retreat their main players but they scored their third after a raking pass cut open the defence leaving Scotland u-21 star Derek Clarkson with an easy finish.

Queen's Park couldn't find any more as 'Well's full time status started to show as The Spiders tired, Richard Bowers and a lanky midfield trialist replaced Tony Quinn and the impressive Alan Trouten, who hit the top of the net minutes earlier with a brilliant lob.

So, a decent start where Queen's held their own against SPL opponents for the majority of the game and now Queen's look ahead to next week's tour of Germany.
