Dirty Rovers vs Queen's Park - Preview

Last updated : 25 August 2006 By Andyboy
It's back to the bread and butter of league business for Billy Stark's Queen's Park side after their stunning penalty kicks success over SPL Aberdeen in the CIS Cup on Tuesday night at Firhill.

We travel to Cliftonhill, to face Jim Chapman's Dirty Rovers, in what promises to be an eventful derby match for Spiders. Rovers have started the season in a decent fashion, sitting level on points with fourth placed Dumbarton, in fifth place after a victory over East Stirling on Saturday. They have also drawn against Berwick Rangers on the opening day and suffered a narrow defeat to East Fife a week later. In between they were eliminated from the CIS Cup 1st Round by Stenhousemuir.

Like Queen's they have celebrated a shock cup victory at Firhill in recent weeks, eliminating First Division Partick Thistle from the Challenge Cup at the First Round stage.

In 2005/06, new manager Chapman got The Dirties playing some decent football, but the lack of a goalscorer was glaring, finishing in eighth place. They hoped to have solved this problem in close season with the signings of former Spiders forward Bryan Felvus and striker Joe Savage, but between them neither of them has managed a goal in the red and yellow of Rovers.

Their record against Queen's last season was mixed. The first encounter saw Queen's triumph 3-1 at Hampden. Mark Ferry scored twice while Felvus scored the final goal in injury time. They met again on Bonfire Night at Cliftonhill and ex-Spider Martin Bonnar's controversial late goal secured a draw after Weatherston gave Spiders the lead.

In the new years derby at Hampden, Scott Chaplain's goal was cancelled out by Mark Ferry's header in the second half but ten man Rovers held on for a 1-1 draw and in February, despite dominating proceedings Rovers won 1-0. Richard Sinclair's 81st minute own goal secured the three points for Chapman's side at Cliftonhill.

TEAM NEWS
Flu victim Frankie Carroll could return after missing the last three games. The calf injury picked up Richard Sinclair on Tuesday night against Aberdeen leaves him almost certainly out and Steven Reilly also looks likely to be on the sidelines with his troublesome knee injury. Definetely out are Tommy Murray (ankle) and Shaun Molloy (hamstring).
