20 year old Cairney broke into the Queen's first team in season 2005/06, making two appearances from the bench, the first as a substitute in a 0-3 defeat to Montrose at Hampden. It wasn't until the second half of the promotion season when Cairney made his mark on the first team, taking advantage on injury to Tony Quinn and making the central midfield berth his own.

He netted his first goal in a 3-0 win over Elgin City at Borough Briggs and went from strength to strength, and was a key player in the past two seasons for Spiders. Cairney will remain at Hampden until January 2009, while training full time with Iain McCall's Jags.
